This spring we planted carrot seeds, watered them and layed a 2 by 4 on top to keep the moisture in while they germinated. I was hopeful but i’d never managed to grow a decent sized carrot yet.
I should have removed the board a day or two earlier. I shouldn’t have left for a week-long trip to Winnipeg right after removing the board. The seedlings died while we were away. Maybe in the wet weather of this past summer, i didn’t need the board.
I tried again in the fall but nothing came up.
Then, three weeks ago, i noticed the distinctly ferny leaf of a carrot among the kale. We waited until frost. On the weekend, i pulled out the pitchfork and Eily pushed it in the soil. Only to find this sad thing:
We’ll have to try again next year.
