gifts

from Eily: a dandelion bouquet and a tea blend made at school for mother’s day. i was enjoying them this morning and thinking about his inner turmoil over dandelions. they’re just so beautiful, he’s told me, and he can’t bear not to pick them, but then they dry out once inside. we’ve had many discussions about them. today’s went something like this:
me: “look, Eily , some of the dandelions have closed up. i think they’re trying to tell us that they want the sun”
E: “but the sun can’t get inside”
me: “then maybe that means that the dandelions should go outside”
He looked at me with all the maturity of his three years and explained:
E: “we forgot that when we picked them”
